Ohio’s Rob Portman’s among Republicans defending Postmaster General Louis DeJoy at Senate hearing Updated 3:49 PM; Today 3:09 PM Louis DeJoy U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy testifies during a video hearing before the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee on the U.S. Postal Service during COVID-19 and the upcoming elections. (U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs via AP)AP Facebook Share Twitter Share By Sabrina Eaton, cleveland.com WASHINGTON, D. C. - U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy on Friday told a Senate hearing that he’ll prioritize mail-in balloting in upcoming elections as Republicans including Ohio’s Sen. Rob Portman attempted to address “disinformation” about changes made since DeJoy took the job. “As we head into the election season, I want to assure this committee and the American public that the Postal Service is fully capable and committed to delivering the nation’s election mail securely and on time,” DeJoy told the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. “This sacred duty is my number one priority between now and Election Day.” The committee’s top Republican, Wisconsin’s Ron Johnson, kicked off the hearing by criticizing Democrats for subjecting DeJoy to “character assassination” and politically motivated “false narratives.” He said DeJoy was not appointed by President Donald Trump, but rather by a bipartisan postal board of governors who hired DeJoy because he has the “necessary background and skill set to tackle the enormous challenges facing the postal system.” Johnson said it’s also false to suggest that failing to provide funding to the Postal Service will undermine the election because the Postal Service currently has $15.1 billion in cash on hand
